When I moved to Stockport, Hazel Grove actually, in 1967 from Cumbria after 5+ years locked up in a Dickensian boarding school I was desperate to see any football and went to any game I could in Stockport or up the road. I was lucky to see City win the title that year including that last game at Newcastle 3-4. I had first seen Franny Lee at Carlisle in 1965/6 playing for Bolton in a 1-1 draw. At City he was everything a Number 9 needed to be, fearless, bustling and tireless. He scored one the best goals I have ever seen that season- a volley from about 25 yards on the end of an outswinging corner- perfection.
We oldies know that Jim 'Pancho' Fryatt was the greatest header of a ball we have ever seen anywhere. Well Franny had the hardest shot I think I have ever seen. Real net busters. I have stated before that my biggest regret in football was that season. I went to see City v West Ham in order to pay respects to 3 of the England World Cup winners and missed County beating Bristol Rovers 3 -1 with Pancho scoring a hat trick of headers. RIP Franny
