Some of the pre-game experience wasn’t as good as it could be. All the pubs close to the stadium seemed to be designated as Carlisle pubs and our one – the Torch – was something of a trek away. Great atmosphere though. I had a bag with me which exceeded regulations but had successfully applied for a Bag Exemption Certificate for medical reasons. I was still somewhat apprehensive of getting it past the outer cordon bag nazis but it actually proved no problem, other than a cursory search of it. They explained our pub was the Torch and where it was. Or you could go to the County fanzone. So I tried that – up the Olympic steps round the far end of the ground and got to the fan zone in the East Village – only to discover that it didn’t open till 11 which was 40 mins away. It would have really helped if the outer cordon lot had known that… And what on earth was going on with that stadium announcer before the game – he seemed hell bent on firing up the Carlisle fans and any mention of County was insipid at best. Not a biggie but somewhat irritating. As for the game I thought we played pretty well for the majority of the 90 mins but their goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of us for a while and I expected them to get a winner. We did manage to steady the ship but we desperately needed Wright’s header to go in. When it came to the shoot out, it didn’t help that two of our three successful penalty takers against Salford were by then on the bench. I felt for Ryan, you could tell he wasn’t going to score – he danced around it like it was a wasp. Anyway onward and upward, hope we keep hold of Dave…. |
