I am all for the powers that be using the resources available to them to keep the general public informed of sporting events and how they might impact their lives. However, I believe I have detected some degree of overkill. Work reasons mean the last two weeks have seen me travelling home via the top few junctions of the M5. Throughout those two weeks, there has been an electronic sign warning of Congestion J1 5-8pm 17 Jan Football. As a seasoned football fan, I know that can only mean a game at West Brom. I’ve had plenty of time to ponder – I know enough to be reasonably sure that the game is not an off the cuff friendly against Barcelona and also that West Brom are hardly storming to promotion. Three hours of congestion…on a Tuesday night in January….there must be something I’m missing. Tonight I finally cracked, given that the darkly warned about chaos is tomorrow I thought I’d better get myself fully prepared. Perhaps Barcelona are in town after all – or I missed Messi signing for a late career cameo in the Championship. So curiosity piqued and full of anticipation as to what will cause three hours of unmitigated rush hour chaos on the northbound side of the M5, I looked at tomorrow’s fixtures. FA Cup 3rd Round replay – West Brom v Chesterfield….. I promise I will report back on the inevitable and expected traffic carnage.
