Again there is not much too add to Hedgegrowers usual expert reporting , so it’s more of a personal look at the Crawley Town experience and a few observations !
I think DC is genuine when he says he is upset that the fans have travelled a huge distance only to go back with nothing , a point would have at least been something . Yes , some fans had either driven down or come on the coaches and would have taken time off work and had to go to work the next day , tired , jaded and exhausted !
I was fortunate that on this occasion that I was able to travel by train , meet up with my son Adam ( who is a London / County fan) , and get down to Crawley . Avanti trains were actually on time , no breakdowns or diversions , plenty of diesel and oil in and a very relaxed feel to the journey with the forthcoming strike called off . We then had to get a Southern Rail train at London Victoria to take us to Crawley . The station there seemed a very long walk to the ground , the info was that it was around a mile but felt a lot longer than that . Some smart looking pubs on the way , looks quite a posh place , some nicely kept gardens and tree lined roads !
Crawley’ s ground was neat and tidy , their main stand looked quite modern and a slightly unusual design . The rest of the ground , and I say this with every respect , had a non league ground look about it , the East Stand was very old with a tented roof on it , but it did it’s job and kept the rain off ! The catering was a bit basic in the corner of the ground but the tea was hot at least !
The minutes silence was perfectly observed for the Queen but fans got a bit confused just after as to whether to sing “ God Save The King or God Save The Queen “ !!
We started the match very brightly had a few half chances and were ticking over nicely , Crankshaw looked a good threat as a striker and we pushed on . Then completely against the run of play Crawley scored a hotspotch of a goal that would have hit the corner flag until it got cruelly deflected . But Crankshaw got us to 1 - 1 with a great finish following a good move . Crawley were there for the taking and I could see us getting in front , lots of good wing back play from Hussey and Brown , mid field was busy , Wright , I agree made a few good fifty fifty challenges , a few good passes , looks quite a strong player . Unfortunately around his own box Wright is too much of a liability and got confused resulting in another daft goal which lifted the home team again .
DC must have read the riot act at half time , and at least we got the goal of the game with a peach of a free kick from Chris Hussey , and at 2 - 2 we had a great opportunity to get the win . Brown put a great shift in as he does , but plays more like an old wing half and at the back can get caught out as he was with Crawleys poor third goal and that was that . On the night , Crankshaw and Hussey were on form , we look better with a back four . Horsfall and Lewis are pretty solid there . I would drop the keeper , give Hinchcliffe a run now . DC needs to bring in Croasdale , drop Wright . Hippolyte could come in on the left and link up with Hussey . Up front , DC made a mistake in letting Quigley go ( he is still “ our player “ though ) , but is as good as Woolton , if not slightly better . Again we can all be team managers ! On the night if you were a neutral you would have enjoyed a thrilling game , five goals , all created by Stockport .
Fans get managers sacked , I wasn’t t aware of any anti DC feeling amongst the fans as he waited for the train home , the fans were more gutted and sick that here was yet another match we have lost that we could have got a result from .
I am going to stick my neck out and say we are four or five points down on what we should have got so far this season . This Saturday is golden opportunity to get back on track against Harrogate who have lost five on the trot . If we lose this one would DC be under pressure the , perhaps a little but he still has a huge amount of browny points in the bank following our historical season last year and all the wins and goals .
I am going to keep faith with team and predict a 3 - 0 win against Harrogate and we could pinch a point at Northampton , maybe 1 - 1 ….
