Up to the take over, we had a few years of reducing the long term debt, running around breakeven whilst making a profit on the transfer market. We invested the maximum of income into the playing budget meaning we were improving on the pitch year on year, culminating in a championship and establishing ourselves in our current league.

Plans were in place to go full time and we had a manager who could coach players and improve them. It was a long term project but sustainable. What we have now depends on one man alone to fund it.

I really enjoyed the Elwood years, but the aftermath of living beyond our means with the support of just one man led us to Cheshire Sports, administration, relegations, non league football, part time regional football, etc.

Football in its current model is unstable long term. My first ever away game was at Halifax - a team that no longer exists, it’s current iteration having to climb the pyramid. Bury no longer exist. There have been, and will be, others.

Football fans have become impatient, demanding instant success which is impossible for most teams as only a few will win things each year. If most fans could accept a steady, long term plan of improvement, things could be better in my opinion.

Finally, in a few years Sky will realise that football needs its money more than it needs football and at that point the money coming into the top of football will decrease and all hell will break loose.
