I'm with you on this. I'd love it to happen for three reasons.
1. To demonstrate to the fans who have rejoiced in seeing monied owners hosing obscene amounts of cash into clubs that buying silverware is no achievement whatsoever. And that the soul of their Club was ripped out the day they welcomed in 'Greeks bearing gifts'. In my scribblings on '57 Hatters Years' I included a quote by Barry Glendenning from the Guardian which encapsulates everything for me when I wrote about City:-
"You can raze a Club to the ground, rebuild it and stick the same old badge over the gate, but don’t try and delude yourself into thinking it’s in any way, shape or form still Manchester City”
2. It will enable English football to reset itself. True there will be far less money in the game, (TV deals will be scaled back hugely for example), but equally maybe some sanity will be restored with regard to players wages.
3. Home grown players will get far greater opportunity to progress - and that can only be good for the development of the game at grassroots level.
I'd love it to happen - but I actually regard the news this weekend as just an opening salvo designed as a negotiation tool. The end product will be that the 'self styled' Big 6 will just get a bigger proportionate share of the existing cake.
