I have some concerns around why we'd develop our own and not utilise the google/facebook api, seems a monumental waste, especially considering the google/FB one has undergone data security analysis and has been proven to not have any issues.
The Apple/Google API is a de-centralised system. This means a device knows which other devices it's been near, but there is no central database of who's been near who. So it's effectively peer-to-peer.
Everyone accepts that it would be better to get this centralised data to epidemiologists. It's more ambitious and it's harder to do, but the people building it have said it can be done. Spending £2.5 million on building an app is a drop in the ocean, particularly if that leads to better control of the virus.
I have concerns over the links between IDOX (who helped develop it) and Dom Cummings.
There is no link between IDOX and Dominic Cummings. This came about because they recently appointed a director called Alice Cummings and rumours started that it was his wife. Dominic Cummings is married to Mary Wakefield, who edits the Spectator.
Respected people in IT Security have concerns around the data security, which gives me concerns.
I'm yet to see any specific concerns about data security, just general comments about your data being sent to a server and not knowing who's going to do what with it. Given that we all do that every day on websites and social media, it would seem odd to suddenly be concerned about it now, when this app could literally save lives.
The NCSS have been involved in the development of the app.
I've not found any quotes data security experts expressing concerns about the app... Do you have a link?
But ultimately, if it helps get us out of this situation, I'll install it and deal with the consequences if anything negative comes from it.
If 80%+ of the population install this app, and it works, we'll have the most effective Coronavirus track and trace system on the planet.
