This is where the fundamental misunderstanding has come from though.

There was absolutely nothing at all stopping the National League clubs from agreeing that the remainder of this season would not be played until, let’s say, January at the earliest. That would have then allowed them to furlough players they haven’t already, let contracts expire, do anything else.

It was also in their gift, in the fullness of time, to then change their mind once it was apparent too much time had passed to make 2019/20 viable any more. Because they’re already under indefinite suspension, with no football, no training, no expense.

They could have agreed an eventual re-start date which factored in a pre-season, a transfer window, all the rest of it. (They will have to do this anyway). Yes, it would have meant that Chorley might end up relegated after 9 games. But that’s sport. Chorley only have Chorley to blame for being in that situation.

Instead, there’s a very real chance they’re going to get to January or February next year, realise they’re haven’t got time for a new season, and end up screening themselves out of even more revenue, because they can’t start a new one and they won’t be able to revive that part-finished season any more. That option has gone for good.

And all those clubs best hope that doesn’t happen, or they’re going to look very foolish indeed.
