Proportional representation creates an electoral system in which parties gain seats in proportion to the number of votes cast for them.
Where is the value in PR?
I can't see any personally.whilst there are so many extremists active.
PR can at worst dilute the power of parliaments by the creation of coalitions rather than strong governments, the election of smaller parties gives rise to one of the principal objections to PR systems, that they almost always result in weak indecisive coalition governments who fight between themselves.
PR will never allow extreme for groups the opportunity for any real power simply the opportunity to stand up in Parliament and spout their venom to go viral on worldwide news and to legitimise the extremists existence.
Now if you want to allow the National Front or the BNP or the Workers Revolutionary Party the credibility to stand up in Parliament and spout their venom with parliamentary privilege then want PR ....simple as that.
Also which form of PR would its supporters want?
Single transferable vote Mixed compensatory systems. Mixed member proportional representation Dual member proportional representation Biproportional apportionment Fair majority voting Reweighted range voting Proportional approval voting Asset voting Evaluative Proportional Representation
And "democracy" is also much used but what does that actually mean as there appears to be many definitions
Is it the the belief that everyone in a country has the right to express their opinions, and that power should be held by people who are elected, or a system of government based on this belief:
If so if PR created a legitimate base for the Nazi Party or the Kill all Gays party would that be acceptable?
