Nobody else on our erudite board has got this in yet, so I’ll post Graham Greene’s well-known quotation from ’The Third Man’. ‘In Italy for thirty years they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.’ I suppose one of the interesting things to come out of the current situation will be its longer term effects and how both individuals and society responds to adversity, sometimes as above, a stimulus for the most striking forward thinking and progress.
