    Plus the smaller the value of the note the less likely it is to be checked, manually or using some sort of machine.

    Pay with a twenty pound note and there's a high chance they'll check it, a fiver probably not.

    Also there are more fivers on circulation and it's normal to pay for more things with them. If you start buying things like a pint, or a paper, or a sandwich with a fiver no one bats an eyelid. You start paying for all these things with twenty pound notes people start wondering "why's he splashing all this cash around" and/or get annoyed at you using big notes for small purchases. Fivers you can spread loads around at a ton of different places and it doesn't look odd or suspect.

    Forgers and criminals know all these things.
