Sapper, although flu doesn't infect 1% of the population every year, let alone kill that many you are correct that most people will come through this ok. Remember though, the old and health compromised amongst us have no inherent immunity and therefore are at a greater risk (we boost peoples immunity with flu jabs every year and it still kills many thousands). If we allow lots of us to become infected on the basis of 'its only like a bad cold' then we will have millions of carriers who then spread it to the more vulnerable, with the obvious consequences.
