Spanish Flu was deadly because it turned people’s immune systems against them, in a cytokine storm, meaning those with stronger immune systems were most at risk of death and those with weaker immune systems were largely unaffected.
Also it was called the Spanish Flu not because it was more common in Spain but because Spain being neutral meant they were the only country that didn’t have reporting bans.
