Yes - I've had gout since my early 20s (I'm 33 now) as a result of an underlying medical condition but it took several years for it to be properly diagnosed. The key for me is getting the right medication, which has basically kept it under control (bar the odd day every so often). The main downside is that I've ad to give up beer and red meat, since these are the two worst things when you have gout. I definitely miss drinking beer (especially because soft drinks are rubbish!), but how I felt the next day became so bad it just wasn't worth it anymore. Unfortunately non-alcholic beer isn't an option either, since the problem is to do with how its brewed, rather than the alcohol.
So, probably not what you want to hear, but it does work - I can now do things (like walking pain free!) that I've not been able to do in years.
