In fairness it depends on the nature of the crime. In some cases women are sentenced more harshly than men for the same type of crime. In others the reverse is true. It was certainly the case 25-30years ago that women were more harshly treated by the system overall. I'm not sure from my reading of stuff that this is the case now, but then there may be reasons for that that represent a required balancing of the system.
In truth there are likely to be so few crimes committed identically in identical circumstances that you can compare how men and women are treated in that regard. It is better to look at the broad picture of sentencing than focusing on one case. And as I said earlier, other factors may come in to play that affect sentencing. That is how the justice system should work (and is partly why saying 'equality just means treating everyone the same' is overly simplistic). I'm not saying women should necessarily be treated more leniently, just that circumstances might mean a different sentence is more appropriate and works better for society as a whole.
