So….I forsook the lap top , vacated no 100, and headed for the Seashell Trust on Stanley Road in SK8 to catch my first under 19`s match of the season namely County v FCUM.
It turned out to be an excellent decision on my part, as a bit of a footballing treat was in store for me as County ran away convincing 5-1 winners against the side from Manchester.
County were nothing short of terrific, especially in the first half which saw them rack up a 4-0 lead well ahead of half time.
FCUM were under the cosh, from the moment that their keeper finally got his wardrobe in sufficient order for the game to start.
And when it did a welter of County attacks led to corner after corner as Cameron Hargreaves, Adam Owen and Abdul Nassrat led them a real dance down the left flank, a productive area for the blues all afternoon.
Hargreaves, a deceptively frail looking player who belies the build defends tenaciously, gives much going forward was very good indeed, as was Adam Owen who proved an inventive threat all game long, but the pick for me was Nassrat – all silky skills, the tenacity I mentioned earlier and real energy in the last third that did his team proud.
I was also struck by David Edwards play at centre back- a rock if ever I saw one, not passed once all game that I can recall- `nuff said!
Naming those 4 does the other County players an injustice, as it was essentially a fine example of team togetherness from them and no one, including the subs, was less than top notch.
So…back to the action then, and eventually the County pressure told, 10 minutes in, when Edwards powered an imperious header home from the blues latest corner.
Four minutes later it was 2-0 as Nassrat picked himself up from being fouled in the box to drill the resultant penalty home.
County went close a few times after this…Kieran Morrisey….Adam Owen….. but it was 24 minutes before they added a third and it came via Cameron Hargreaves who impishly robbed the FCUM right back of the ball before nipping into the box where he promptly buried the ball in the back of the net!
That was excellent, but it was another 14 minutes before the first half scoring was complete, and it came following a fine move involving Hargreaves and Owen, whose cross was drilled in by Kieran Morrisey.
FCUM opened with gusto after the re-start and they were making more of a contest of it, that said it took a decent save by their keeper to deny a goal hungry effort from Owen on 53 minutes.
Jack Hanchy ( on at the break for Matt Noon) went close on the hour, but it was gradually becoming apparent that as the visibility darkened so did some of the tackling from FCUM. The officials clocked most of this, and the visitors were by no means as `carefree` with the discipline as I have seen in the past, but, some of it was uncalled for.
The 65th minute saw one such foul, on Hanchy, punished by a free kick from Owen, that the keeper and his cohorts just managed to scramble off the line.
Hanchy copped it again 5 minutes later, but one more the keeper kept the free kick out to keep it at 4-0.
Just when we thought maybe the scoring had ceased, it hadn`t, and a brilliant break by Owen and pass to substitute Matthew Knott saw him slot County`s fifth in the net.
Game over then…. Well it probably should have been, but right at the death FCUM nicked one to rob County`s Dimeji Willan of a deserved clean sheet.
No matter….there was time for more excellence from Nassrat in what remained of the game, but Knott just missed out on the end of that to close proceedings with County comfortable 5-1 winners.
    County line up:-
Willan, Noon ( Hanchy 45), Hargreaves ( Neal 77), Hopkins ( Cata 77), Edwards, Stanyer, Morrissey, Greenhalgh, Clarke ( Knott 61), Owen, Nassrat.
