It's the arrogance of expressions such as forelock tugging masses and the notion that the only people that can really think are people that agree with you which has helped fuel a move away - not so much from Etonian Lords as from progressivism which demands compliance and conformity of thought. The problem with progressives is that, through the echo chamber of social media, they have come to think that most people agree with them and that those who disagree are morons. This, along with the stifling of any serious debate, has caused what you call forelock tugging masses to consider progressivism to currently be a bigger threat than Etonian Lords. I seem to remember Etonians David Cameron and George Osborne were in favour of the EU.
