    Player contracts Archived Message

I know I keep banging on about it but just read a very good article on The Athletic about player contracts, bonuses etc.

    A couple of excerpts here:

Nowadays, however, The Athletic’s research has found that players do not just have goal bonuses written into their contracts almost as a matter of routine but also receive a hefty payment for every one they set up. Not just Kevin De Bruyne or Trent Alexander-Arnold, either. This goes all the way down to the lower divisions, with one League One club paying a player £500 every time he contributes an assist, even if it is just winning the free-kick that a team-mate fires in from 25 yards, or playing a simple pass before somebody else beats three opponents to score. They all count.

£500 assist bonus in League One

The details, for example, of Arsenal paying Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang £18.2 million on top of his £198,000-a-week salary when he signed from Borussia Dortmund, including a £15.15 million loyalty bonus and £50,000 every time he started a league match.

Or how about the £6.7 million signing-on fee that Alexis Sanchez apparently banked at Manchester United to go with his basic annual salary of £20.35 million in wages and marketing rights and supplemented by £75,000 for every game he started?

A £75k bonus for starting a game, on top £20m pa wages .

    Bonkers.

I don't expect the League One £500 assist bonus to be common practice, and obviously we're a world away from players like Sanchez and Aubameyang, but it does shine a bit of light on the kind of money floating about and what might be required for us to become an established team at the right end of League One, which is what I think most of us would be happy with.
