Exactly. It's been 400 years since the Mayflower and nearly 250 since Independence. Spelling didn't start to get formalized either side of the Atlantic until the mid 18th to early 19th century. Before that, color / colour and center / centre were fairly interchangeable, for example. Old Bill Shakespeare used color and center more often.
Anyway. I have to use 'sked' these days (if I remember) to be understood. And pronounce 'water' in weird ways or I'd die of thirst.
