I keep reading how he's a local hero. For the record, and not wanting to be unkind, but he's nothing of the sort. He's a Geordie sure enough but his only connection to north east football to date has been managing sunderland. Milburn, Beardsley, Waddle, Gascoigne, Shearer- now those are local heroes who we will tell our grandchildren about if we were lucky enough to see them in black and white. Bobby Charlton never wore the shirt but achieved iconic stature and we're proud to recall his Ashington roots. Steve Bruce was a decent centre back for a rival club, we knew he was from North Shields but hardly followed his career with particular interest because of that. He'll become a local hero if he wins the FA Cup though, I'll give him that.
