I haven't been back nearly as much as I'd like since I graduated. The Barber Institute was fabulous, I did a few staged readings there as a student. Last time I went (for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the drama department) the most striking changes were the extension of the Aston Webb building to fully enclose the semi circle and the new bypass off the Bristol Road. Plus the sad loss of the Gun Barrels pub. I was sad to learn the old library has gone as well, spent many a day in there and have fond memories.
Funny that story about Widdicombe, I didn't realise she'd gone there. Closest to that in my day was the leaders debate they held there for the 2010 general election. I remember walking on to campus and clocking snipers on building roofs. It was all a bit unnerving.
Coincidentally my brother just moved to Edgbaston, off Hagley Road. His other half is from Wolverhampton and it all just seemed more sensible for them to live in the midlands than paying more to live in a glorified bedsit in south east London.
