There have been a couple of posts recently calling into question whether Jim is being backed and how we are much weaker now than we were last season.
While I agree that the squad is not yet a completed entity and the need for a recognised left back is essential I think overall, were no worse off now than we were at the end of last season.
A lot has been made of the loss of Warburton and his goals and while I do think Warby was a wonderful player, for me, Connor Dimaio is better. If (and at the moment it is a big if) he stays fit and is available week in week out, he’ll prove to be a far superior player than Matty ever was in my honest opinion. Connor has the ability to unlock a defence with one clever pass and his close control and ability to maintain possession is sublime. I think the other attacking players will benefit hugely from Connor being in the team.
Jake Kirby is another worth a mention. Jake has sadly suffered from injury problems last season so again it’s a big if, but if he stays fit, he is far better a player than Stephenson. He has goals and an end product.
Frank Mulhern looks sharper (and somewhat stronger?) than ever and links up well with Connor, Adam and Jake.
From a defensive standpoint, yes we need a left back. Absolutely.
The centre back position is one where we currently have cover and it all depends really on what Jim thinks of Jordan Downing and Festus Arthur. If Jim believe they are capable as back up should there be an injury, then we essentially have 4 centre backs available.
Personally, I would much prefer Jordan Keane in centre midfield as he is far better than Paul Turnbull so at least 1 (preferably left footed) centre back would be required to facilitate this.
Overall, I don’t think we’re in bad shape at all. As a hybrid club, we’re not going to be challenging at the top, but nor do I feel we’re going to struggle.
All my opinion. Comments are as always, more than welcome! Stan
