DEBRECENI VSC 0 FERENCVÁROSI TORNA CLUB 2
Debrecen suffered a potentially fatal blow to their lingering title hopes as they crashed to a 2-0 defeat which also left them outside the Fizz Liga’s European places.
The Lokos had slipped to 4th yesterday when in-form Zalaegerszeg went above them as they made it four wins in five with victory over Kisvarda.
And Debrecen blew today’s chance to reverse that and make ground on the leading two clubs with this Sunday afternoon reversal in the big game at the Nagyerdei Stadium.
Debrecen had much of the first half pressure but a second half brace from January transfer window signing Marius Corbu sealed the win for the reigning champions.
The Romanian attacking midfielder struck twice in seven second half minutes as the Green Eagles went top on goal difference from Győri ETO.
Debrecen's Spanish boss Sergio Navarro rang the changes to try and get the home side back into the game with five second half substitutions but the Budapest team held firm.
The victory came at a busy time for the wider club of Ferencvárosi, coming shortly after their last 16 Europa League exit to Portuguese club Braga and a week before the Hungarian national elections.
Like Puskás Akadémia, Ferencvárosi are another club inextricably linked to Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party with MP Gabor Kubatov their current president. However, the Fidesz party are under serious political pressure - trailing the centre right Tisza party by more than 20 per cent in the polls.
The Green Eagles have a historic County link – former striker Anthony Elding netted eight time in 15 games for the club during a brief spell in 2010. Elding’s son Owen was in the news this week, scoring for Hibernian against Kilmarnock after just 13 seconds in their 3-0 Scottish Premiership win yesterday.
Debrecen remain 4th and next play seventh placed Kisvarda away on April 13. Second place Győri ETO can regain top spot by avoiding defeat against Nyiregyhaza this evening
