Fourteen years later, after over a decade in non-league football, the club returned to League One – three league titles in six seasons propelling County back to the third tier.
For lifelong County fan Desmond Hinks, this felt like the perfect time to tick off a lifetime ambition of watching every single game, home and away, throughout the whole campaign. And that’s exactly what he did. From Louie Barry’s Goal of the Season just four minutes into the new season in August, to the heartbreak of a play-off semi-final defeat in May, Desmond experienced all the highs and lows over a 10-month 56-game adventure.
With Desmond celebrating his 40th birthday during the season, the book also reflects on four decades as a County fan (he was a baby when his dad first took him to Edgeley Park). There’s memories of beating four Premier League clubs as County reached the Coca-Cola Cup semi-finals in 1996-97, the club’s remarkable rise from the National League North to the brink of the Championship in recent years, and the tale of a trip to Blackpool twenty years ago when Desmond and his friends had a run-in with armed police after a day on the ale…
The book’s scheduled for release in October, priced at £12.99. To pre-order the book, and have one of the first copies in your hand, email thescarfmyfatherwore@substack.com.
