Application DC/092211 – Stockport County Football Club, Edgeley Park
The Supporters Co-operative are the democratic and representative voice of Stockport County supporters. We are part of the Football Supporters Association (FSA) and are governed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Our organisation meets regularly with the football club, to help provide supporters with a stronger voice.
We are writing to support the hybrid application from Stockport County Football Club for planning permission to expand Edgeley Park to provide 7,405 additional seats, which takes place on 3rd July 2025.
Since the arrival of Mark Stott in January 2020, the Club has seen tremendous growth, winning promotion to secure our valued Football League status, after 12 years in non-league football. A further promotion followed in 2023 – 24 to League One, and now the Club are challenging for promotion to the Championship.
Attendances have seen a similar growth rising from 4,342 in the 2019 / 2020 season, to 9,602 last season. The Club will have 7,200 season ticket holders next season and expect league games to sell out on a regular basis. This limits the potential of the Club – and their ability to be competitive, as the capacity of Edgeley Park is 10,852 and the average attendance in the Championship was 22,047 for the 2024 / 25 season.
This also limits the work by the Stockport County Community Trust to invite local schools to watch Stockport County, when they promote the Club in local schools as part of their Healthy Living campaign and the Supporters Co-operative to invite junior football clubs, as Edgeley Park doesn’t have sufficient capacity.
The value that Stockport County and the Community Trust add to the town and wider borough is tremendous. Expansion of Edgeley Park will help boost the local economy and create new jobs. It will allow the Club and Trust to further enhance the fantastic support they provide to the local community and local charities and importantly it will allow the Club to increase their profile as they carry the flag for the town across the country!
We would strongly urge the Planning and Highways Committee to support this application on 3rd July.
