What happens now is that the unpredictability is lost. No longer does someone's car fail when leading (Nigel Mansell-esque). Once you're out in front, you stay there to the end. Might as well switch off after the opening couple of laps.
Also, drivers are penalised for taking risks now (equivalent of steward's VAR) if they are deemed to go for a gap which was marginal, so over-taking is few and far between.
Just as an example as to how predictable it is, I think Max Verstappen has only failed to finish once in the last 60 GP. Even someone like Oscar Pistori has completed every single lap in every single race this season.
