We broke our transfer record under Hartford (Angell, Mick Matthews), then with Bergara numerous times (Frain, Edwards, Gannon, Neil Matthews, Flynn), and subsequently with Megson (Cook, Moore).
For the amount of money provided compared to other clubs, it would have been relatively easy to get out the old fourth division ( no disrespect to Danny by the way) and it helped hugely to get out the old third division. Seem to remember the team photos under Bergara had massive squads and we were signing new players on a par with Neil Young.
We dId however skimp on ground improvements a lot. The Pop sIde conversIon was done on the cheap, the Cheadle End was funded by grants offered post Hillsborough, but we did relatively little elsewhere in the ground compared to other clubs. We’ve still got the Railway End debacle because of that. I think we got barred on claiming more grants due to some tendering discrepancies which were featured in a special Radio 5 documentary.
