Loved the way Conference National and North trophies were paraded around the pubs and clubs so you could have a photo taken. Can't dangle anything off the front of an open top bus parade unless you've actually won something.
Champions are down in history forever. Always be there as 'winners'. The best of those that entered. Players get medals, the club gets something in the trophy cabinet and we can feel proud.
Winning stuff far out-trumps second place promotions or going long in cup competitions.
As much as the 1996-97 season was a 'success', it would have been perfect if we had a couple of extra points to beat Bury to top place. Had much more enjoyment in the aftermath of the Conference National season to be honest, because we had the silverware. And I bet the older generation did in 1966-67 too, as did Dosser in 1936-37.
