Just to move lightly sideways; one of the best players County ever brought in from nowhere was Ron Staniforth who went on to play for England.[Staniforth got eight England caps, all in 1954, including three in the final stages of the World Cup.]
After service in the Royal Navy during WW2 he became a milkman and played in local league football, signing professional for Stockport County [946–1952] the relatively late age of 22.
