I am puzzled by Trippier, who spent quite a lot of time as (what we oldies used to call outside right — a la Stanley Matthews). He received the ball in plenty of space on that wing and had quite a lot of ground forward towards the Bulgaria goal but instead of taking it forward and then passing to a striker, he passed it back towards his own goal.
That said, and like the last match, England did far too much back passing. It seemed to me that some of our players were not putting themselves in a position to accept a forward pass and therefore giving the man with the ball a limited option.
