Thank you for your interest in this study. The purpose of this research study is to find out how much hearing tests change within a two-week period, and to figure out why those changes occur. Let me take a few moments to explain the study.
At this time, we seek female volunteers between the ages of 20 and 69 and male volunteers between the ages of 40 and 69. The volunteers do not need to have perfect hearing, and we will screen for hearing losses that are too great to meet our needs.
This is a long-term study conducted at Western Michigan University with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which is a part of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
If you choose to participate in this study, you will be asked to fill out some short surveys, complete some hearing tests, and wear a personal noise dosimeter during the time they are involved in the study. The personal noise dosimeter is an electronic device that would measure your sound exposure.
You would spend less than 4 hours on this project. After an initial meeting, hearing test appointments will take place in a research lab on the Western Michigan University campus, and you would be asked to come in for five (5) appointments on different days. Each appointment will take 40 minutes. The last hearing test appointment must happen within 2 weeks of the first hearing test appointment.
The only known risks of participation in the study are the loss of confidential information about your hearing ability, lost time spent doing the research, and the possibility of mild discomfort from plugs we would place in your ears during a few of the tests. We will explain how we have minimized these risks before you start the project.
If you finish all test sessions, you will be reimbursed $77 for your time and expenses. We will give you a part of this reimbursement after each test session. If you choose to stop participating at any point during the project, you will keep the reimbursement for any test sessions you already completed.
So that is a summary of the project. There are a number of details to cover in an informational meeting before we start, and we will want you to review these details before you reach a final decision about participating. If this project sounds interesting to you, I would be happy to find a time and place to meet where we can discuss these details and get started.
If you would like to arrange an appointment to find out more, please let us know. We’ll identify a time and place to meet, complete some paperwork, and get you started.
Please email me directly at sppa--hearinglossprevention@wmich.edu or call 269-387-7331 and we can proceed from there.
Sincerely,
Kristy
