This will be the third street Kalamazoo has converted from one-way traffic in the past decade. South Burdick Street was reverted to two way traffic from Lovell to Cedar, following the opening of the Kalamazoo Mall to one southbound lane of traffic. One block over, South Rose Street also reverted to two-way. The reverted section of Burdick used to be northbound only. The one-way part of South Rose Street used to be southbound. Kalamazoo County's second busiest intersection, West Main Street (M-43) and Drake Road, will be expanded beginning Tuesday, July 10. A second left turn lane will be added in all directions as well as the addition of a right turn only lane on southbound Drake. The additional left turn lane is most needed for northbound Drake, which queues up traffic the most. This not only causes drivers to wait and waste fuel, but also prevents others from directly accessing businesses near the intersection. Also, the traffic lights and signs will be updated. This includes replacing the static "no right turn on red" signs with lighted signs activated only when the opposite direction is turning left. This project is scheduled to be completed in late August. Concurrent with the West Main and Drake project, M-43 will be resurfaced from the Kalamazoo County line to City of Kalamazoo limit at Arlington Street. Resurfacing is scheduled to continue into September.
