Most of my market was with wool carpets. I discovered that cleaning detergent-free with a cold rinse was equally effective as a hot rinse but when it came to tea and coffee stains, cold was better.
Hot was always superior with very high soil loadings, especially pubs and restaurants. It feels weird to me to fill a machine with hot water but it took a long time (years) before I could accept that it would work effectively. If I was to use a detergent like most in the industry, I would always use hot.
As for protector, it varies from business to business. I was a lazy marketeer as I didn't need the extra work/income so I only brought the benefits up when quoting new customers and there was a good uptake. For existing customers, I was too busy training them to have the kettle boiling and tea bags at the ready every hour, on the hour
