At the same time more people were beginning to have fitted carpet due to the introduction of cheap foam-backed carpets but the only manner of cleaning of which I was aware was soap/detergent shampooing which I saw as a means of spreading the soils more evenly over the carpet whist adding more soil in the form of soap/detergent residues.
I set out to design a machine capable of actually removing the soil whilst leaving minimal residues.
Having built my first extraction machine I needed carpets on which to test it. My advert attracted ten enquiries and from those further responses came in at a surprising rate. I did not intend to become a carpet cleaner but I did need some income to finance further R&D.
Fifty-four years on the rest is history! I am still growing this family tree of repeat and referrals (without the need to have a second advertisement).
You could say that the industry chose me rather than the other way about.
