There are many substances that will fluoresce in ultraviolet light, it is simply that certain crystals refract that wavelength of light in a manner that causes the emission of light of different wavelength that we perceive as a different colour. This is how optical brighteners work. White linen treated with an OB will appear blue-tinted in UV but in white light the effect is to cancel out the natural yellowing that occurs with vegetable fibres, correcting the perceived colour as a truer White. A hydrometer will give a true reading of specific gravity that can be matched to specific liquid conditions at specific temperatures, so it can distinguish between different liquids whereas UV light cannot,
