I never visited the site to give an ESTIMATE but, working in a fairly good, compact trading area, I would always do my best to visit to give a free QUOTATION for a new customer. More important than selling a service, we are also selling ourselves and this is where a site visit really pays dividends. An exceptionally high conversion rate, certainly more than 90%, and up-selling was much easier too. I also commanded a much higher price than most of my competitors. Having siad all of that, most of my work over the last 15 years or so was repeat, so no visit for them, I had already recorded their details. If your trading area spreads far and wide, my approach probably wouldn't work for most of the time, nor if you were constantly looking for lots of new customers every week.
