Open the cap to the motor and take a reading on each line from cord prong to each wire connecting to motor. I had an old variable speed machine that did that. Wires had been over heated so much that they were breaking. I first replaced plug and cut cord back to healthy wires but continued to happen. Wasn't till I put a meter on it and found the ancient cord was just done. I think what causes it is a device that requires a certain amount of amps but doesn't get it and it finds the weakest point in the system. My RV would do the same thing when I ran a/c or electric heaters. The plug caught on fire a few times. Replaced cord and use a power booster now to give me required amps/volts.
