The entire first season of "The Jimmy Dean Show", which includes the episode with Jim is now available on the www.jimmydeanshow.com The only down side to this, however, is the price. With tax included, he set costs 128 dollars! You can pay it off in 4 insallments, which softens the blow a bit, but it's still a lot of money. These shows are all remastered from the original film negatives too, so they should look great! You can watch an unfirmercial for the set on the Jimmy Dean site...

The promotion which states these are derivative of the original "film negatives" is rather misleading. The Jimmy Dean show was videotaped, and as such when broadcast the video quality was pristine. All that apparently survives, however, are kinescopes -- film copies made by pointing a camera at a TV set, in essence. These are of course watchable, but nowhere near optimum video quality. Mary Reeves was an early advocate for preserving these shows but apparently her advice was not heeded by the owners of the Dean broadcasts.
The sound volume on the broadcast this past week was far too low and they apparently used compression on it as well, an amateurish mistake which caused more harm than good.
Having said all that, what was presented on RFD-TV was still far better than the dreadful video posted on YouTube which even has portions missing. So I applaud that network for resurrecting these old shows, which are immensely enjoyable. I thought Jimmy's last solo (which was never shown on the YouTube post) was a very impressive jazz number and quite surprising. Seeing Jim Reeves, of course, was the big thrill.
Thanks to Jim's rodeo star young ladyfriend, Judy Ford, for calling us about an hour before the broadcast to tip us off that this very rare TV appearance by Jim Reeves was about to air.

This set cost about 125 dollars, which is way overpriced, but I've been waiting for it to come out for years, so I bought it anyway. So far, I've only watched the episode with Jim, and I am quite happy with the quality. As Larry said, these are kinoscopes, but I think these are some of the best kinoscopes I've ever seen. Frank Sinatra's welcome home TV special for Elvis getting out of the army in 1960 only exists as a kinoscope also, and it looked much worse. There was a glare on the picture at times, which took away a lot from the visual quality. As Larry also said, the audio on the Jimmy Dean footage is compressed and certainly could sound better too--but overall, I have to say that the Jimmy Dean shows are very watchable and look and sound quite good. On the you tube footage of Jim, it states that Jim was on the show in February of 1964, but the DVD has it ad April 2nd, which I believe has to be the correct date because I have the original copy of TV Guide that my mom had saved from the week it was on...
