American expressions

There are a few words that I don't fully understand in the epic biography that Larry toiled over,I'm greatful to the person who provided us with an indispensable index to the magnificent tome,I was just wondering if anyone out there could now compile a 'Glossary',not only of American terms and expressions,but also some of Jims' sayings,such as what sounds like:-'Half drunk and dark thirty',or 'I heard you when your foot hit the bridge',but 'lost' on me and I am sure quite a few others.Thank you in advance.

I don't understand them exactly either and I'm a Southerner from North Carolina via Georgia.It may be generational as well as cultural.I'm also not sure I understand the old southern expression "Losing my religion"either,as its not meant literally but REM made a pop rock song of it in the early 1990's.

I've heard it said that Jim made up a lot of the 'sayings' he came out with,as to wether they had any meaning at all,he was no doubt amused in confusing people,he would be laughing heartily if he knew that they were still being discussed 50 years after his death.
What does 'Cornpone' mean?This is why there is a need for a 'Glossary'.

There's the movie "Zero Dark Thirty",I thought it was a military saying.I don't know what it means.

I like the expression "I heard you when your foot hit the bridge." Now that is worth repeating. LOL!! Maybe it has something to do with the old troll that lived under the bridge?

Like I mentioned in an earlier posting,I think Jim made up a lot of the expressions used,just to confuse people,he probably didn't even know what they meant!

I have no clue what Jim means by "I heard you when your foot hit the bridge", but I suspect somebody over age 60 from east Texas might know.

As for "I'm half drunk and it's dark thirty", well, "I'm half drunk" means that he has been drinking and is a little high, but can still function fairly well, and "it's dark thirty means it is a little past dark. The two things used together are sort of a lame excuse for what he is doing not turning out as well as he had hoped.

That is my take on it, but I am open to being corrected.

I liked Jim's little saying about good grammar: "I made but only one grammatical mistake in my life, and I seen it when I done it and I taken it back!"

My wild guess on 'I heard you when your foot hit the bridge.": Could be saying one is too late to stop another from doing or saying something that cannot be undone... heard, but not in time, like stopping the suicider who takes the bridge exit. Or maybe referring to someone 'stumbling' when they came to a musical bridge? I recall hearing the expression used, but forget where. Oslo, maybe?
