Ernest Tub had a gravelly voice that does not appeal to me but, as stated, had some good songs.
Same with Johnny Cash, who had some very good songs, and garnered more acclaim that Jim did. Unjustly in my view.
I think some appreciation is driven by time, circumstances and events.
Slim Whitman's "Indian Love Call" was a big part of the movie "Mars Attacks".
Alan Jackson's "Where Were You", is associated with the tragic events of 9-11, as Jim's "Distant Drums" is associated with the Vietnam War.
Sometimes a gimmick makes songs popular such as "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash.
How about "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" or "My Boomerang Won't Come Back" "Monster Mash", and "Flying Purple People Eater?
Lots of good performances out there. Hard to determine what makes them popular.
I doubt we can define it.
One thing for certain, is that Jim had the best voice out there, and appreciation for it gets greater with time.
