Link: Artists screwed by Ken Burns
Out of over 900 minutes of broadcast time with his multi-part series (which I believe cost a fortune to produce -- funded by wealthy benefactors of PBS -- and began production in 2010), it is incomprehensible that such a poor job was done covering the subject.
Obviously, Mr. Burns and his colleague Dayton Duncan don't know a thing about country music. But Ken is a supreme self-promoter who even managed to get on POLITICAL shows to hawk his series.
Michael Streissguth, author of the trash book on Jim Reeves, was a consultant to Burns. Streissguth wrote THREE books on Johnny Cash and one on Roseanne Cash, so that probably accounts for the absurd emphasis on Johnny throughout the series that so many people are complaining about.
The fact that Jim's name was merely mentioned, without any insight provided into his career or the importance of the Nashville Sound, is likely also attributable to Streissguth's influence.
The whole series is a gigantic farce. It is far from a documentary on country music. It's a MESS.
