She took me to visit the Hall of Fame (which was then in a MUCH smaller building) when I first visited her in 1968. She told me that before Jim died, they tried to hit him up for a donation of $10,000 I think it was, in order to have his name engraved. She told me neither one of them liked that idea, though Jim was of course supportive of the concept of a museum that would honor the country greats. But Mary was treated like a celebrity when she and I arrived on a Sunday afternoon. Fans recognized her and she was mobbed by autograph hounds. This was my first time meeting her though we had corresponded for two years. She had picked me up in Jim's Cadillac and chauffeured me around town. I felt pretty important leaving the Hall of Fame with Mrs. Jim Reeves!
I still have some color photos I took that day and I remember she was wearing a hot pink dress. These are actually slides and I have been intending to get prints made sometime. When I do I will post something on my blog.
