Link: Audio samples of new Bing/Rosemary CD
Did you know that according to the Guinness Book of World's Records, the Bing Crosby fan club is the oldest such club in existence? They even publish a glossy quarterly magazine that is mailed around the world. Many fans of Jim Reeves are also fans of the great crooner, Mr. Crosby.
Well, there's a wonderful review in the new issue of "Bing" magazine by Richard Baker, who is widely respected as one of the chieftains behind the fan club and an acknowledged expert. While admitting he dislikes overdubs as a general rule, he admits "From the sonic point of view the revised tracks work beautifully. Bing’s voice is undoubtedly enriched and we have a glorious stereo spread and depth of sound. We even have some sound effects on Rosemary’s ‘Ebb Tide.’”
Mr. Baker reports "The oldest source used (‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’ from the commercial Decca release of 1949), has been improved enormously. The duets, fairly free in their musical treatment, also benefit — ‘Man (Uh-Huh) and Woman (Uh-Huh)’ exemplifies this, and the slower, relaxed numbers gain from the extra colour... Heard through full range equipment, the string bass has a dominant role on many tracks, though on some equipment this will be less obvious.”
Baker takes note of the skillful editing of the originals to eliminate unwanted sounds. He praises the fact that “Buddy Cole’s organ interruptions (which I have always hated) have been omitted or obscured by overlaying alternative instrumentation. It could be argued that if the tracks were recorded just a few years later in stereo, this is the way that they would emerge...”
Reviewer Baker concludes, “Overall I am sure that the issue will attract a lot of support and positive comment: it will delight very many because it sounds very good indeed to any casual listener: if it widens the number of fans that is good.”
To receive such praise from a distinguished leader of the Crosby fan club is quite something, and a good testimonial to how superb this new CD is.
