Model 1866 loading

I can't find anything about how the Model 1866 (1" caliber) guns were loaded. It appears that there was a "hopper" on the left holding 20 rounds in percussion cap primed steel tubes. I also find pictures and references to tinned "magazines" but suspect that they were simply boxes of 20 rounds which were uncapped and dumped into the hopper as the need arose. Can anyone tell me if I'm right and if not just how the so-called "magazines" actually worked? Thank you. Tom
