Many thanks for your comments Ed. And very interesting about the E. elliptica. Did your really cold temperatures in zones 8a and 7a follow directly from mild conditions? In other words, would be plants have become hardened by cool temperatures (cool nights particularly) prior to exposure to 6F and 0F? Your climate is particularly challenging for eucs, given the likelihood of precipitous drops in temperature following mild weather. But some euc species do seem to be able to cope with this, as you've demonstated very well!
