Ian, thanks for sharing your experiences---bery interesting. FWIW, e nitens has done super here for me and has had no damage in the last two bed december frosts. agreed that coccifera is very over-rated hardiness wise but that nova-anglica should be planted much more. i would also push very hard for e. scoparia which comes from the same area as nova-anglica and most importantly has sustained no frost damage since i planted it about 10 yrs. ago and is absolutely splendid---e. rubida's bark with nicholii's folage. kartzofiana took TWO years to resprout. banksia integrifolia was killed to the ground for me last winter but is finally putting back some shoots. you might consider planting melaleuca alternerifolia which survived last winter in a pot so midht indicate some possible hardiness.
