Re: When to Plant in N.California
auburn is in the foothills so i would suggest that you save your seeds (in the fridge) and start them indoors in feb and them plant them out in may or so (or whenever you would set out tomato plants to avoid the last frosts). do not take them directly from outside to planting but give them time to adapt to outside conditions (a week or so at least) by putting them out in a semi-shaded area during the day to avoid sunburn and them bringing them in at night the first couple of days to avoid cold shock. once again, the blue gum may not be happy with the winter cold spells and hot dry weather (you hardly see them at all in the central valley) but the snow gum should be more adaptable. the other possiblilty is to go with already started plants of hardy species from on-line nurseries like "forestfarm", "colvoscreek", or "thedesertnorthwest"---look for species like gunnii, archeri, neglecta, parvula, urnigera, nova-anglica,glaucescens, nicholii, perrinniana, also niphophila, gregsoniana, and pauciflora (these 3 are all called "snowgum"), and any other species that are listed as "frost/cold hardy". good luck.
