Nope, didn't mulch or anything. But I planted it very deep, and on a southwest facing bank with a large evergreen shrub directly behind it. The extreme amount of snow we had this winter may have helped protect the roots as well. The coldest it got all winter was around -1 F, which is typical, but it was during heavy snow cover.
I have planted several perriniana and parvula in various protected locations around western PA and only once before did one come back in the spring, only to suddenly die soon after. I'm interested to see if it continues to survive as a perennial and for how many years.
