I had met him twice before and he seemed to be stable and confident. Since bringing him home a few days ago I have noticed that he will sometimes shut down around some odd things. Today, he completely shut down when I opened my car door to get something. He just cringed low and and pulled hard for the house - where he immediately returned to normal. Compare that to when we picked him up, he jumped right into the back of our SUV and into the crate and was calm, quiet and curious all the way home. There are a few other examples of shutting down but I won't go into them here.
Inside the house, he is a dream dog. Outside, he is good but for a few of these odd moments. I have had success overcoming some of his minor insecurities with food, toys etc. but I don't know how to deal with these shut downs.
Is it common for semi-adult dogs to regress temporarily when re-homed? Are there any good resources out there that would help me manage the process of getting him comfortable. Most of what I have come across relates to new puppies or introducing adults. I am looking for information on how to make a new adult feel comfortable when everything in his life has changed.
