Thus far, his training has been on a martingale collar and 6' leash. He wears it at all times to allow for timely corrections (except when crated or at night). He knows sit, down, and though he does not have a verbal command for heel, he walks on my left side with a loose leash walking only when I step off with my left foot. The idea with this is to eventually get him to the point of being able to walk off lead. He's pretty consistent with this, the main issue we have with the concepts he has learned so far is a down and hold. He doesn't have a verbal command for hold/stay, he is put into a sit or down and I step off with my right foot and he should stay in place until released by calling his name. The problem is, he doesn't want me to get too far away from him. 5-10 feet out and he will almost always pop up and run to catch up.
This may be pertinent information, and there may be a happier medium than the current method, but he has not been trained with any food or treats. He is strictly rewarded with praise and attention.
